Weathering The Storm

Georgia is bracing for another round of bitter cold temperatures. The next few days are slated to start out in the teens and 20’s. In fact, beginning this morning through next Sunday, the beginning temps of the day will be below freezing.

In many Northern states, this is nothing new and you may scoff at us Southerners, but we aren’t used to this. This is not our normal. In fact, there’s a meme going around about us throwing a “temperature tantrum” if it does not warm up soon.

During a predicted storm, the prevailing joke is that people rush out and stock up on bread and milk. Planning ahead for any storm is a wise thing to do, but I usually opt for things other than bread and milk.

Life can throw all kinds of storms at you. How storm prepared are you? Cancer, death, job loss and financial problems are just a few of the big things you might face. How spiritually ready are you for these if they hit you?

In order to weather it, your faith needs to be full-up. Trusting God with your finances and every day decisions are crucial to strengthening you before a storm hits. Tithing regularly helps prepare you when disaster strikes your marriage.

At first, they don’t seem related, but you’ve probably heard faith described as a muscle that needs to be exercised. Those small things lead to bigger things and those bigger things lead to monumental things.

I learned this first hand a few years ago when I battled cancer. I have now fought through an initial diagnosis and then another round of it to come through a second time in remission. My faith played a large part in my mental state during all of that.

Faith kept me focused on just how big God could shine through it. Faith had me believing, no, knowing, that God would walk with me through it. There was never any doubt on my part.

If you find yourself doubting, that is ok. The way I met that challenge was the way I did it. You will meet it the way that you do. You may doubt, you may question and you may be more or less scared than I was. All of that is OK. God is ok with your doubt and questions. He is ok if you are strong and filled with faith.

Weathering your next storm begins in trusting God with small everyday decisions. If you wanted to become physically strong, you would invest in equipment to build up your muscles. You would invest in time in the gym. You would seek out physical trainers and read up on what to do.

To weather life’s storms, you will need to invest in spiritual workouts. Read up, learn, put into practice those things that will bring about spiritual growth. Weathering the next storm starts before the storm.
